Club History
Our club and our much loved sport has come along way since 1934. From wooden sticks, games played on grass fields and basic hockey skills we are now playing with carbon sticks, have 5 quality artificial playing surfaces in the South West and have stick skills with names!
Since our 65th anniversary back in 1999 we have had some huge successes on the hockey field with 5 A-Grade Men premierships in a row being one of our biggest! Closely following this is winning champion club 9 years in a row, and 5 in a row since 2021.
The year 2000 saw three Boyanup women's hockey teams successfully re-join the association with the A Grade women taking out the premiership in their first year!
We have had numerous juniors come through and represent their state with the likes of Marshall Roberts,Michael Nicoli, Candyce Peacock, Coby Green, Jake Harvie, Tom Harvie, Sophie Johnston, Curtis Read, Phoenix Green, Nicolas McCaughan, Rosie McCaughan, Ky Fisher, Fletcher & Bede Wetherell, Cobi and Raine Fisher, Charlie Johnston, Jack Tosana, Brayden Dalton and Alex Liddiard
We have also had numerous Senior/Masters players excelling, some representing their state, and others representing their country. Kane Wetherell, Anita Scott, Lauren Johnston, Jane Manning, Jennna Gmeiner, Marie Haddet, Michael Rae, Dean Lomax and Allyce and Michael Sewell have all represented Australia.
A bit about the beginning... Back in the bygone era there were basically 4 teams in the competition, namely Ex-students, Towns, Mount Lyell and Ferguson. Mount Lyell was actually the area that is now the CSBP factory in Picton and Ferguson was centred around the Wellington Mills area which had a population that was virtually the same as Bunbury due to the large Timber industry in the area.
The Boyanup men formed in 1934 and according to Life Member, the late Jock Duce, they were taught how to play the game by the Boyanup Ladies hockey team, who first started playing in 1930. Their playing surface was where the local cattle sales were held and not very good to play on. In 1936 they joined the Bunbury and Districts Hockey Association winning a premiership in their second year in 1937. They used to travel for games to Donnybrook, Harvey, Brookhampton, Stratham and Dardanup.
The Boyanup women folded in 1978 but as mentioned, were resurrected in the year 2000 and have been going strong since.
And we’ve achieved a heck of a lot since the beginning.
